Leadership & Communication
Inform or communicate? That is the question!
13-09-2019
I learned communications in the field. In my professional experience, people have asked me to “communicate information” internally...everything from the installation of a new printer to the operations manual for a new payroll system.
Reflecting on this, “communication” could well be applied to any type of message that concerns interactions between company employees or between employees and those outside the company.
So...what is the added value of a communicator? Is a communicator just a “letter box” that ensures correct delivery?
In reality, there are two distinct concepts: Informing and Communicating.
Informing means ensuring that everyone at a company or on a team receives important—often operational—information in order to perform their duties in the best possible conditions. Everyone should be able to do this task. This is the role of the messenger.
Communication goes much further. Communicating means filtering and digesting information to determine the best way to transmit it. In what way? Through what medium? For what results?
Thus, we understand the added value of a communicator who is able to transcribe and faithfully transmit to their audience exactly what they want to convey.
For a business owner, this requires an additional effort: not only to provide staff with the right information so they can perform their duties to the best of their abilities, but also to communicate to each of them, sometimes in different ways, the corporate vision and the future goals of the company. By succeeding in this, keeping constant contact with employees, the business owner is sure to drive all their employees in the right direction and ensure everyone's support for the business project.
